What panchakarma actually involves

Panchakarma is a prescribed course of treatment, not a spa package. What to expect, how long it takes, and why nobody reputable will quote you a price up front.

Panchakarma appears on a lot of menus in Rishikesh alongside massage and steam. That framing is misleading, and it is worth understanding what the word actually describes before you book anything.

Panchakarma is a staged programme of therapeutic cleansing prescribed after assessment. The five procedures it names are medical interventions in the Ayurvedic tradition, not treatments you select from a list because they sound restorative.

It begins with a consultation, not a booking

A genuine programme starts with a practitioner assessing you — constitution, current imbalance, digestion, sleep, medical history. What follows is decided from that assessment.

This is the clearest signal available for telling a real programme from a spa package with an Ayurvedic name. If a centre will sell you panchakarma without seeing you first, they are selling you something else.

It also means two people arriving on the same day may receive quite different treatment, which is the intended behaviour rather than an inconsistency.

The timeline is longer than the brochure

Preparation alone — oleation and sweating, to move things toward the digestive tract — typically runs several days before the main procedures begin.

The full arc is usually seven to twenty-one days, and the post-treatment period matters as much as the treatment: diet is restricted, activity is limited, and rushing back to normal life undoes much of it. A three-day panchakarma is, at best, the preparation phase sold as the whole.

Plan for the recovery window. People routinely book a flight for the day after treatment ends and regret it.

Why the good centres will not quote you a price

Because the programme is not known until you have been assessed.

A centre quoting a fixed price for a fixed number of days before meeting you has decided your treatment in advance, which is the opposite of how this is meant to work. Expect an indicative range and a firm figure after consultation.

This is also why our listings show a price for so few Ayurveda centres. We would rather show nothing than show a number that turns out not to apply to you — and in this category, that is more often the honest answer than not.
