The Yogic Guide

Which part of Rishikesh has the most yoga schools?

Every guide says Tapovan. None of them says how many, or what the difference between quarters actually amounts to when you are staying for a month. Tapovan holds 146 of the 250 centres we could place by neighbourhood — 58% of them.

What each quarter is like

Tapovan · 146 centres

Above the river on the west bank. Cafes, gear shops, and other students everywhere. The default choice for teacher training, and the wrong choice if you came for silence.

Most common here: Meditation (120), Retreat (107), Hatha (84), Pranayama (82).

Swarg Ashram · 42 centres

The east bank, and quieter in a way that isn't subtle. No alcohol or meat sold, many places have a curfew, and the evening aarti happens at the ghats. Where the traditional ashram programmes are.

Most common here: Meditation (37), Pranayama (32), Retreat (29), Yoga Alliance (25).

Laxman Jhula · 40 centres

Below Tapovan, around the bridge it's named after. Busier and more mixed — pilgrims, day-trippers and students in the same narrow lanes. Good for a short stay and drop-in classes.

Most common here: Meditation (32), Retreat (30), Pranayama (27), Hatha (26).

Veerbhadra · 13 centres

Further out, away from the river. Quieter and more spread out, with the trade-off that everything is a rickshaw ride away.

Most common here: Meditation (11), Retreat (10), Hatha (8), Pranayama (7).

Muni Ki Reti · 9 centres

Nearer the main town and the bus stand, less visibly a yoga quarter. More everyday Rishikesh, and usually cheaper to stay in.

Most common here: Retreat (6), Meditation (6), Meals (4), Ashtanga (4).

A caveat about these counts

Neighbourhood comes from matching each centre’s postal address against the quarters we know. 54 centres have an address too vague to place, so they appear in no quarter above. The percentages are shares of the 250 we could place, not of every centre in Rishikesh.

The practical advice, if you are choosing: visit twice before committing to a month. The quarter shapes the experience more than any single amenity on a school’s website, and the walk between banks is longer than the map suggests.
